Chapter One
I could hear noise outside the widow so I ran to my spot on top of the sofa where I looked out the window. I saw the pack leader arrive with the big moving house and suddenly realized that we were going somewhere. Oh boy, I can’t wait to go out.
My name is Stella and I’m a Cocker Spaniel. I love to travel with my family. We go to far away places in a big moving house.
Where are we going?
“Papi is here with the camper,” my master called out to the puppies.
“Ok, I’m turning off the computer,” said Megan.
“What time is Caroline arriving?” asked my master.
“She’ll be here in 5 minutes,” said Meg.
Suddenly, I saw everyone moving around in the house carrying large objects and some shiny things.
“Can’t you put your shoes in your suitcase?” my master asked the puppies.
“They don’t all fit in the suitcase so that is why I have some shoes in plastic bags,” replied Meg.
What about my things? Don’t I get to bring a bag?
“Alison, will you take Stella’s bag as you go outside?” asked my master.
I have a bag too? I hope you brought me lots of snacks!
Just as I was getting ready to follow the young puppy outside, I heard a long and loud noise that hurt my ears.
“Oh, that must be Caroline at the door!” said Meg. I saw her friend was at the door and she too held a large bag in her hand.
“Hi Caroline,” said Meg.
“Hi Meg,” said Cari. “I’m so excited about going to the Dolomites with your family.”
“Let’s go outside. My dad has arrived with the camper,” said Megan.
“Yes, I saw him outside when my dad dropped me off. I think they’re still chatting,” said Caroline.
“Wait, I’m coming with you,” said Alison.
I followed them down the stairs and we all went into the big moving house. They started to throw their objects and shiny things everywhere. This is exciting, I thought to myself.
Where are we going?
My master arrived just after us and she closed the door. I ran to the front of the big moving house and jumped up on the front seat. I couldn’t see outside so I leaned on the big wheel and I suddenly heard a loud noise.
“Stella!” cried the puppies. Suddenly, everyone looked at me and I didn’t know why but they were smiling and laughing.
“Stella, come and sit with me while Papi drives,” said my master. She took me and placed me on her lap. I could now look outside and was happy to see the pack leader get into the big moving house.
“Was that Stella who honked the horn?” asked the pack leader.
“Yes!” cried out the puppies.
“I can tell we’re going to have lots of fun on this trip with Stella,” said Cari.
“She always makes us laugh,” said Meg.
The big moving house started to move and my master put something in the black box that was close to where we were sitting. Suddenly I heard a voice singing. I looked and saw the puppies and their friend Cari as they laid on the sofa. I looked out the window and didn’t see any animals outside singing. There are moments that I don’t understand why things happen - I only know that they do. Everyone seemed to be happy so I sat on my master’s lap and closed my eyes.
After a while my master decided to get up. So I went to lay on the sofa with the puppies. Meg pulled me close and put my head close to hers on a soft white thing. I closed my eyes and was fast asleep.
“Shall we stop at the next petrol station for a coffee?” asked the pack leader to my master.
“Yes, so we can take Stella out for a short walk too,” said my master.
“Why are we stopping?” asked Ali.
“So Papi can have a coffee and you can take Stella out for a walk,” said Meg to Ali.
“Why do I have to take Stella out?” asked Ali.
“Because I took her out the last time,” said Meg.
“Mamma, can you take Stella out? I want to sleep,” said Ali.
“Ok, I’ll take her out this time but you’ll have to do it next time. Understand?” my master said to Ali.
“Ok,” said Ali.
I suddenly realized that I was going out. My master fastened my leash to my collar and we were out the door in a few seconds. It was really hot out. In fact, this must be the hottest month of the year.
“Will you pass me Stella’s water bowl?” my master asked the puppies.
Nobody responded.
“Will someone please pass me Stella’s water bowl?” she asked again.
“You could at least do that, Stupid!” said Meg to Ali as she handed my master my water bowl.
“Leave me alone – can’t you see I’m trying to sleep?” said Ali to Meg.
“Sleep your life away!” said Meg.
“Mamma, can I go to buy some chips,” asked Meg to my master.
“Ok, I’ll come with you,” said my master.
My master led me back inside of the big moving house and closed the door. I jumped back up on the sofa beside Ali and lightly scratched her arm to get her attention.
“Stella, I’m trying to sleep,” said Ali.
I scratched her arm again and made a soft growling noise to attract her attention.
“Stella, I can tell that you’re in a playful mood and you’re not going to let me sleep,” Ali said. She picked me up and held me close to her face. I like when she does that.
I could see from the widow that Megan, Caroline and my master went into the building they called café. They came back out moments later holding a bag.
Meg and Cari got back into the big moving house.
Soon I heard the older puppy yelling at the younger puppy.
“Move over,” said Meg.
“I can’t move over. There’s no room,” said Ali.
“Well, I’m falling off the sofa, so move over,” said Meg again.
“I told you I can’t,” said Ali
“Girls, will you stop arguing?” asked my master.
I jumped off the sofa and went to sit next to my master.
The pack leader got back in and then moved the moving house to another area nearby.
“Girls, will you watch Stella while I get out to fuel up the camper?” asked the pack leader.
Pack leader, where are you going?
As soon as the pack leader got out of the moving house, I jumped onto his seat and leaned on the big round wheel to see outside.
Suddenly, there was that loud noise again and I could hear the pack leader shouting from outside.
“Will you please stop that, Stella?” asked the pack leader as he looked at me.
Can I come out with you?
“Stella! Get off that!” shouted Meg.
“Amore, come here. I’ll take you outside to Papi,” said Ali.
I suddenly saw she had my leash in her hand. I must be going out.
Hurry, I want to go out.
She fastened my leash and opened the door to go out. As soon as I saw the door open, I ran down the steps fast.
“Stella, don’t pull me down the steps,” cried Ali.
Hurry, I want to go to the pack leader.
I was finally outside and went straight to the pack leader.
“Hello Stella,” he said.
I followed him around the moving house until I could not go further. The pack leader was holding a long tube and there was a strong smell in the air. I didn’t like it much. I put my head up in the air and took a deep whiff. Oh, what a smell! I needed to get rid of that horrid smell from my nose so I shook from my head through my body to my tail.
Nope, that wasn’t enough. I had to go back inside the moving house. I ran back to the other side and ran up the steps into the moving house.
“Stella, stop pulling me around,” the younger puppy said as she stepped inside and closed the door.
“I can finally sit down and relax now,” the younger puppy said.
“Will you pass me the chips please?” asked the older puppy to the younger.
“I just sat down,” said the younger puppy with a frustrated expression.
“So what,” said the older puppy.
I jumped on the sofa, snuggled up to Meg and closed my eyes. I heard the pack leader and my master getting back into the moving house. I looked up to glance at them as they sat and tied their bodies to their seats with those strange belts.
“Ok so now that we’ve all had a little break, we should get going since we have a long drive,” said the pack leader.
“How much longer do we have to drive Papi?” asked the younger puppy.
“It should be 8 hours still,” he continued.
The younger puppy grimaced and sat down at the small table inside of the moving house. She pulled out her black box and put the strings in her ears. I could hear the noise coming from her ears and looked at her for a moment to see if she would say anything else. She turned towards the window and as she closed her eyes, I snuggled closer to Meg and fell asleep.
I suddenly felt a foot in my back and opened my eyes to see what happened. I saw the older puppy was standing on the sofa trying to get something from one of the cupboards up high.
“Sorry Stella, I didn’t mean to kick you,” she said.
She immediately caught my attention and I was sitting up watching her. Maybe I could help her find what she was looking for. So I stood up and leaned on her leg hoping to get up high to reach into the cupboard and pull something down for her.
I suddenly realized that I wasn’t that tall and I couldn’t reach any higher than the older puppy’s leg. I barked to offer assistance. I want to help! What are you looking for?
“Get down Stella before you fall,” she said.
“Stella, come and sit with me,” said Cari as she pulled me close.
“I know the cards are in here. I just can’t remember where we put them,” Megan said.
“Mamma, do you know where the cards have gone?” she asked.
“They should be in the cupboard above the table where all the games are. Have you looked there?” my master said.
“Yes and they’re not in there. I thought they’d be up in this other cupboard,” said Meg.
“Well, if you put things back where you find them, you will find what you are looking for the next time,” said my master.
“We’d like to play cards but can’t find them,” she continued.
“Let me see if I can find the cards,” said my master.
So she got up and went to open the cupboard above the table where Alison was sitting. As she opened the cupboard door, some of the games fell out and hit Ali on the arm.
“Ouch!” she cried out.
“Sorry. I’m looking for the cards but they don’t seem to be up here,” said my master.
“I saw them in the cabinet above the kitchen sink,” said Ali.
So my master went to look inside the cupboard above the kitchen sink and found the cards.
“This is why I tell you need to put things back where you find them,” my master said while she passed the cards to Meg.
Meg and Cari then got off of the sofa and pulled off the cushions. Meg then picked up a flat piece from the bottom of the sofa and straightened a stick that was attached to it. She then took the flat piece and hooked it to the panel just below the window. It made a large table! I had to go closer to smell it. It didn’t smell like anything in particular.
They placed the cushions onto the bottom and the back of what were the seats and then they sat down. I jumped up onto the cushion next to Meg and put my paws up onto the table. I then moved forward and jumped up onto the table. The table’s cover was smooth under my paws.
“Stella! Get down. We want to play cards,” said the older puppy.
I looked at her a little sad that I couldn’t play too but jumped back down onto the seat beside Meg.
Meg handed out some of these cards to Cari and to herself. She then put the rest on the table. I sat and looked at Meg hoping that she would give me some of these too.
She didn’t even look my way so I decided to get her attention. I scratched Meg’s arm with my paw. She didn’t really do anything, so I scratched her arm again. This time, I made her cards fall.
“Stella! I need to hold onto the cards to play the game. Stop scratching my arm,” she said.
I looked at her and tilted my head to try to understand what she meant by playing the game. I was playing with her. I scratched her arm to ask her to play. Why doesn’t she want to play with me instead of those silly cards? As she bent down to pick up the cards that fell to the floor, I jumped to the floor and kissed her hand.
“Stella! You know I love your kissy wissies but I need to play now. Sit next to me and help me play,” she said as she picked me up and sat me next to her. She wrapped her free arm around me and I was finally happy because I could play with them.
Meg held the cards in a way that I could see them. I tried to help her choose one by scratching it and sometimes she would pull it from the group in her hand and place it down on the table.
The pack leader suddenly stopped the moving house quickly and all the cards on the table went flying onto the floor. I rushed to the floor to help Meg and Cari pick them up.
“Stella, give me the cards back,” said Meg.
I looked at the older puppy and thought about giving her the cards back but suddenly a naughty side of me came out. I laid down low with my front legs held out in front of me. I had a few cards in my mouth and this was my chance to play. So I shifted left a bit and waited for her to come for the cards. As she did that, I moved to the right. Then I moved again to the left.
“Stella, stop moving around. I need all the cards to play with Caroline,” she said.
This was my chance to have a little more fun so I turned and ran towards the back of the moving house. They followed me and thought they had me cornered but then I ran between their legs and ran to the front of the moving house. I ran straight to my master.
“Stella, what do you have there?” asked my master.
I looked at her with round eyes hoping she wouldn’t give me up. She picked me up and held me in her lap. She then took the cards from my mouth and placed them in an opening in the door closest to her. She winked at me and then put her finger to her mouth. “Shhhhh,” she said to me.
“Mamma, did you see where Stella put those cards she had in her mouth?” asked Megan.
“Sorry!” my master responded.
“How are we supposed to play if we can’t find all the cards?” asked Meg.
“Maybe Stella wants to send you on a scavenger hunt,” said my master.
“What is that supposed to mean?” she continued.
“That maybe Stella wants you to play the hot and cold game,” continued my master.
“Ok so how do you play the hot and cold game?”
“You start to look around and if you are far from where it is hidden, then Stella will say that you are cold and if you are close, she will say you are hot,” said my master.
“Ok so let’s just say that we play this hot and cold game. How are we supposed to understand if Stella is says hot or cold?”
“I can tell you what Stella says because I understand her,” said my master as she held me close and kissed me.
“I get it now. Ok let’s play this game then. Stella are the cards over here?” she asked as she looked at a cabinet above the smaller table.
My master whispered something in my ear and then I kissed her on the cheek. She turned to the girls and gave them a clue.
“You’re freezing,” she said.
“Freezing? Does that mean that I am really far away from the cards? Did you throw them out the window Stella?” Meg asked.
I wouldn’t throw your cards out the window!
“Just look harder,” said my master.
So Megan and Caroline went through the moving house asking if they were hot or cold and when they were on the right track they suddenly found the right spot.
“Girls, I need to stop to fuel up now. So this will be your chance to stretch your legs if you want to do that,” said the pack leader.
Suddenly, I realized that we might have been going outside. So I jumped down from my master’s lap and went to sit by the door.
The older puppy fastened my leash and as soon as she opened the door, I was out like a flash.
“Stella, slow down!” she said.
Hurry – I need to relieve myself soon!
She brought me to a patch of grass and I immediately started to sniff the area until I found a spot that I liked. Cari joined us and then I noticed that they both had those black boxes with the strings in their ears. How do they communicate if they can’t hear each other?
I could see from where I was sitting that my master and the younger puppy went into the building they called café. They came back out shortly after with some of those cone shaped ice creams and a bag.
We walked back to the moving house. My master handed to each of the puppies and Cari an ice cream and then she handed the pack leader a cup of coffee. She then opened the bag and pulled out some sweet smelling biscuits. She handed one to the pack leader and took a bite out of the other biscuit. I sat beside her and looked up hoping she would give me a piece.
I realized that she wasn’t planning on giving me a taste so I stood up and leaned on her leg. Her coffee cup fell to the ground and the dark liquid splattered all over the ground
“Stella! Look what you have done!” she said.
I sat there and gave her my best sad look. She then looked at me and patted my head.
“It’s ok. I know that you didn’t mean for my coffee to fall,” my master said to me.
She cleaned up the mess on the ground and we all climbed back into the moving house. I went to sit by my master and the pack leader. The puppies were both sitting on the sofa along with Cari.
The moving house started to move again and I lay down listening to the humming noise as we drove further down on the motorway.
I must have fallen asleep because I was soon dreaming that I was sitting with Vilma in the café having coffee. We were sitting at a small table talking about what we had planned for the next weekend. Vilma told me that she would be going with her family to visit the Marmore Falls in Umbia. I had been with my family the year before so I told Vilma all about the water falls.
We then decided to share a muffin but then couldn’t decide on which one to eat. So we ended up having a blueberry muffin. We cut it in half and each took a piece. We looked at it and noticed there were these blue pieces inside. We decided to take a chance and taste it.
It had a sweet taste and as I talked, Vilma noticed that my tongue had turned blue. I noticed that her tongue was blue also. It must have been the blue pieces inside the muffin that turned our tongues blue. We drank our coffee thinking that would help but then found out that our tongues were still blue.
We got up from the table and went to the animal at the window to pay but when we got there we noticed that we didn’t have any of those coloured papers to pay for the food. So we weren’t sure what to do and so we asked the animal at the window if we could work to pay for what we had eaten. He looked at us a little strange and then agreed.
So, we were brought to a room in the back and were given gloves and a dishtowel. We weren’t sure what to do with these but then the animal explained that we had to wash the dishes and dry them too.
So Vilma and I got to work. I washed and she dried. When we finished, the animal told us that we needed to carry the trash outside. So we each took a bag with our teeth and pulled it towards the back door. Just as I was about to open the door, it opened and hit me on the head. I was out cold!
I awoke thinking my head would hurt but I soon realized it was only a dream.
